Where Do Her Sailors Sleep? (HMAS Sydney)

WHERE DO HER SAILORS SLEEP?
Words copyright Graham Seal; tune ‘Silent Night’ arr and adapted G. Seal © 2007

The loss of HMAS Sydney (II) in World War 2 was a massive shock, followed by decades of not knowing what happened and where every one of her sailors slept.

On the day when the Sydney sank under the waves
All of her sailors went down to their graves
Lost to their loved ones, lost to us all
Sons of Australia, they answered the call
Sydney lies silent and deep
Where do her sailors sleep?

She was sunk by a raider’s torpedo and shell
Where she lies now no tongue can tell
Her hull is broken, her engines are hushed
Her flags are faded, her guns are all rust
Sydney lies silent and deep
Where do her sailors sleep?

Far off the Western Australian coast
The sea is sighing with her sailors’ ghosts
Calling to us from their ship to the shore
Waiting for us and peace evermore
Sydney lies silent and deep
Where do her sailors sleep?
Sydney lies silent and deep
Down where her sailors sleep
