Smoke and Ash

W&m Graham Seal © 2020

A song of anger on the 2019-20 Australian bushfires, the heroism of the fire-fighters and resilience of the people and the complete failure of their political leaders.

This land is choked with smoke and ash
Our rivers thick with cinders
Our hearts are charred beyond despair
Smouldering in the embers

In the scorching heat of summertime
The whole country was burning
Firefighters went to war
Where firegrounds were raging

If our tears could only fly to you
Across the thirsty desert
Over the mountains and the plains
To quench your flaming forests

If you are in danger’s way
Where the fiercest flames are blazing
Take care, take care on your home ground
If there’s nothing left for saving

This land is choked with smoke and ash
Our rivers thick with cinders
Our hearts are charred beyond despair
Smouldering in the embers

They sold the land, they sold the bush
They sold the earth beneath us
They sold us out for pride and gain
Now they’ve nothing left to sell us

Time to tear their masks away
Time to stop their lying
They left us to fight the flames alone
With the tears that we were crying

(rpt) Our land is choked with smoke and ash
Our rivers thick with cinders
Our hearts are charred beyond despair
Smouldering in the embers
