THE FIRST FAIR WIND

Words and music © Graham Seal 1971; 2009

This love song won the national Songwriting Award at the National Folk Festival in 1972.

Your ship is waiting by the harbour wall
For the first fair wind
To bear you to the coast of ivory
My tears will fill the tide you sail upon
For that first fair wind
Will blow your last kiss to me

And while you’re drifting down the summer shores
With a gentle breeze
Breathing dreams through your whispering sails
Your thoughts will fly upon the seabirds’ wings
Long leagues away
From the quiet harbour side

But when the empty sky fills with thunder
And the gulls have flown
Far away from the crying clouds
Your eyes will search the squalls for just one fair wind
To bear you safely on
To the harbours of home.
