Diamond Jack
Words G Seal, music trad USA (‘Diamond Joe’), adapted and arranged G Seal
Novemberish 2020
The back story concerns a desperate fight from Java to Broome in 1942. The plane, carrying a fortune in diamonds, was shot down by the Japanese at Carnot Bay. After the survivors were rescued, beachcomber Jack Palmer arrived in his lugger, retrieved the diamonds and – well, the rest, more or less, is in the song.
G. D G D

G D
Jack Palmer found those jewels when he came sailing by
G. D. G. D
There was diamonds in the creek beds, diamonds everywhere
G D
Kids played marbles with ‘em, ladies wore them in their hair
Chorus
G. D. A
Diamond Jack, Diamond Jack
G D
You’re a mystery, Diamond Jack
Jack went to join the army, saw the officer man
Poured two bottles full of diamonds straight into his hand
‘Any more where these came from?’ ‘No sir’, Jack replied
But the army knew about those jewels and they said that Jack had lied
Chorus
They took Jack to the courtroom for what they said he’d done
But he was found ‘not guilty’, there was a war to be won
And when the war was over, Jack was living high
Up there in the Kimberley they all knew the reason why
Chorus
Jack went into hospital, they said he’d soon be dead
Every night he locked a little bag underneath his head
Nurse come in one morning but Jack he made no sound
Little bag beneath his bed nowhere to be found
Chorus
Up there in the Kimberley they ain’t nobody’s fools
Diamond Jack is dead and gone, but they’re still looking for his jewels
Final Chorus
Diamond Jack, Diamond Jack
You’re a mystery, Diamond Jack
Diamond Jack, Diamond Jack
You’re a mystery, Diamond Jack
Diamond Jack, Diamond Jack
Now you’re history, Diamond Jack
