Flower of the West

(tune ‘Lily of the West; lyrics copyright G Seal 2010)

When I first came to Coolgardie, my fortune to find
A woman there from Melbourne town was pleasing to my mind
Her ruby lips and flashing eyes robbed me of my rest
I fell in love with Laura – the flower of the west

I courted lovely Laura, showered her with gold
Courted her both night and day and when I was so bold
She promised she would marry me, but I was soon distressed
I was betrayed by Laura – the flower of the west

One day as I was working down by the Old Camp mine
I saw my lovely Laura thefre with another man entwined
I stepped up close beside them both and stabbed him in the chest
I killed a man for Laura – the flower of the west

I was sent for trial - ‘not guilty’ was my plea
They brought her to the witness box to testify for me
But she coldly swore my life away and so I have confessed
Now I will hang for Laura – the flower of the west

Somewhere in the desert is a place where no birds fly
A lonely grave is lying there beneath the empty sky
A broken cross stands on the grave with these few words impressed:
Here lies the man who died for Laura – the flower of the west.
