The Blessing of the Way

Words and music copyright Graham Seal 1996

Based on the well-known Irish blessing, I wrote this after my father died. A few others have also found it comforting in grief.

May the road rise up to meet you as you go
May the wind behind you ever gentle blow
May your journey be worth starting
And its end be worth the parting
May love be there to greet you where you go

May the sun shine on your footsteps every day
And the moon light up the darkness of your way
May the stars all point you truly
Wherever you want to be
May going mean more to you than to stay

May the ground be always soft beneath your tread
And the rain be only rainbows far ahead
May your songs be worth the singing
And your gifts be worth the bringing
May you keep the promise of the words you said.
