Stilltown Lullaby

STILLTOWN LULLABY w & m copyright Graham Seal March 2012

In Western Australia, and possibly beyond, 'showies (people who travel from show to show with their sideshow alley amusements), use 'stilltowning' to mean resting between shows. Showies are a distinctive and proud social group who play an important role in everyday Australian life, past and present.

The show is all over, the tents have come down
              G                          D                C                          D
We’ve packed up the pitch and cleared off the ground

Your daddy is home and we’re all safe and sound
           G                D                  C
We’re stilltowning tonight

We’re stilltowning tonight

Sleep tight

We’ve sent on the 24-hour man
To put up the posters and mark out the stand
For sideshow alley and our caravans
But we’re stilltowning tonight
We’re stilltowning tonight
Sleep tight

Hush up your crying, don’t make a peep
The night is short and it’s time to sleep
Your daddy and I have a promise to keep
And we’re stilltowning tonight
We’re stilltowning tonight
Sleep tight

Tomorrow you’ll wake up and we’ll pack up again
Back on the road in the sun and the rain
To another showground – oh, they all look the same
But we’re stilltowning tonight
We’re stilltowning tonight
We’re stilltowning tonight
Sleep tight
D            G
Sleep tight.
